Abnormal

First-line treatment
The first treatment or combination of treatments that a doctor recommends for a disease.

Immune system
The body’s natural defense system that helps fight infections and disease.
M
M proteins
Abnormal proteins made by myeloma cells that can be found in the blood.
Maintenance therapy
Ongoing treatment given after initial therapy to help keep disease under control.
Median
Median is the middle number in a group of numbers arranged from lowest to highest.
Minimal residual disease (MRD)
A special test used in clinical studies to look for very small amounts of myeloma cells after treatment. If you are MRD negative, no myeloma cells were found in the sample tested. MRD negativity is not the same as a cure.
Multiple myeloma (MM)
A disease where plasma cells become cancerous and grow out of control.

Refractory
The cancer isn’t responding to treatment.
Relapse
When cancer comes back after responding to treatment.
Remission
When the signs and symptoms of cancer have reduced or disappeared after treatment. It’s important to know that this is not the same as a cure.
REMS
Risk Evaluation and Mitigation Strategy. A special FDA-required safety program for certain medicines. It helps protect patients by making sure they understand the risks and how to use the medicine safely. Your healthcare team will guide you through this process.
S
Second-line treatment
Treatment or combination of treatments given if the cancer comes back (relapsed) or stops responding to treatment (refractory).
Side effect
An unintended reaction to, or result of, a treatment.
Stem cell transplant (SCT)
A procedure that replaces abnormal stem cells with healthy stem cells.
W
White blood cells
Cells in the blood that help fight infection.
