Multiple myeloma is the second-most common blood cancer in the U.S.
Multiple myeloma develops in a type of white blood cell called a plasma cell, found in the bone marrow. Bone marrow is the soft tissue inside your bones.
In multiple myeloma, these plasma cells start to grow out of control and become cancerous. They are known as myeloma cells and may form in multiple locations throughout the body.

Remission
A “remission” is when the signs and symptoms of cancer have reduced or disappeared after treatment. It’s important to know that this is not the same as a cure.
Relapse
A "relapse" is the return of a disease or the signs and symptoms of a disease after a period of improvement.
Refractory
"Refractory" means the cancer isn’t responding to treatment.
There can be multiple periods of remission and relapse following treatment.
